Lunch on a stony beach

One of the best things about living on Gotland, in Kappelshamn, is that we can go to the most beautiful places and have lunch or supper. We have many places to choose from within 30 minutes by car.

Today we drove to Stenkusten/the Stone Coast. You go to Bläse, pass by the Bläse Kalkbruksmuseum, and follow the handmade signs for Stenkusten. Be prepared for a very bumpy road! We’re talking BIG bumps. Drive carefully! Just follow the main road – any adventures with trying to take the smaller roads outside the main road may end up in places you might not really want to go to by car…

So, what’s so special about Stenkusten? Well, it’s stony? Actually, that’s the whole thing. Lots and lots of stone, packed together in sea banks, stones that has been there since the beginning of time… Actually, 400 million years ago, Gotland was built by coral reefs near the equator. That’s why you can find many fossils from the Silurian age, but be careful: it’s not allowed to pick fossils and take them home if you are on beaches like Grodde (on the way to Bläse). Even so, it’s always interesting to find fossils, pick them up, figure out what kind of fossil they are, and then put them back on the beach.

Maybe this was not a good explanation of what’s special about Stenkusten? I try one more time. When I visit Stenkusten, I get a strong feeling of freedom. The blue sky, the bay meeting the open sea, the sterile stones, the dwarfed pine trees and the birds. It’s a good place to relax. A place where your senses can rest.

I live and work on Gotland, Sweden’s biggest island, right in the middle of the Baltic Sea. I’m interested in many things and somehow I happened to start four blogs with different content.

Asa In the Middle of the World is in English and is also about life on this island, but the content has changed to be more about Apple. I’m very interested in Apple and since 1989 I’m a Happy Apple User.
