Reflections after my visit to Estonia

Entrance to ICT Demo Center, Ülemisty City

Now I’m back home after my short visit to Estonia. It felt like a happy injection from the future to be there. Yes, there are still so many problems for them to solve, but the spirit is optimistic, and they are doing a great job over there. The overall feeling is that everyone is so young and they have a fresh attitude towards new technology. Their digital ID-cards and the invention of Skype are good examples of that.

I saw a mac! The moving guy is Krister Kalda from EAS – Estonian Enterprise

I think they are really skilled in Estonia, and they are young and hungry to be part of the world’s development; in fact, they want to be an active, important part. Compared to Sweden, we have a lot of that too, but we don’t have Estonia’s hunger, the deep desire to show the world! Of course, some people in Sweden have it, but with supportive surroundings filled with people who are also optimistic and heading toward the future, the power is much stronger.

The building next to the ICT Democenter. We had lunch here.

It’s time for everyone to think of Estonia as a new Silicon Valley, a place for exciting technological development and forget ideas about Estonia as a place for producing cheap goods, as I think is what comes up first when Swedes think about business and Estonia.

Entrance to Tehnopol. Skype was developed here!

One of the most inspiring visits during our trip was at Garage48. They have a model for the “innovation race” that I find very interesting. I will try to see if there is any interest in it here on Gotland. It would be so cool if we could have more connections between Gotland and Estonia.

You can see more of my photos here, but the text is in Swedish.

I live and work on Gotland, Sweden’s biggest island, right in the middle of the Baltic Sea. I’m interested in many things and somehow I happened to start four blogs with different content.

Asa In the Middle of the World is in English and is also about life on this island, but the content has changed to be more about Apple. I’m very interested in Apple and since 1989 I’m a Happy Apple User.
