Lunch on a stony beach

One of the best things with living on Gotland, in Kappelshamn, is that we can go to the most beautiful places and have lunch or supper. We have a lot of different places to chose from within 30 minutes by car.

Today we drove to Stenkusten/the Stone Coast. You go to Bläse, passes by Bläse Kalkbruksmuseum and follows the handmade signs with Stenkusten. Be prepared for a very bumpy road! We’re talking BIG bumps. Drive carefully! Just follow the main road – any adventures with trying to take the smaller roads outside the main road may end up in places you might not really want to go to by car…

So, what’s so special with Stenkusten? Well, it’s stony? Actually, that’s the whole thing. Lots and lots of stone, packed together in sea banks, stones that has been there since the beginning of time… Actually, 400 millions years ago Gotland was built by coral reeves by the equator. That’s why you can find a lot of fossils from the Silurian age but be careful, it’s not allowed to pick fossils and take them home if you are on beaches like Grodde (on the way to Bläse). Even so, it’s always interesting to try to find fossils, pick them up, try to figure out what kind of fossil it is and then put it back on the beach.

Maybe this was not a good explanation of what’s special with Stenkusten? I try one more time. When I visit Stenkusten I get a strong feeling of freedom. The blue sky, the bay meeting the open sea, the steril stones, the dwarfed pine trees and the birds. It’s a good place to relax. A place where your senses can rest.

May on Gotland

The 30th April we celebrated Valborg with the traditional bonfire by the sea. Just some neighbors getting together, singing a song and grilling a couple of hot dogs. We have had unusually hot weather in April, but a couple of days before Valborg the temperature went down and it was quite cold.

Now the warmth is back. The grass is green. The birds are happy and the cats love to roll around in the grass and enjoy all the exciting smells. At a distance, across the Kappelshamn bay I can hear motorcycles at the racing circuit Gotland Ring. The Seagulls have had good days when a farmer plowed his acer and they could catch delicious worms…

The trees are beginning to turn green and the apple blossoms will soon turn the garden to a white dream.

This might be the best season on Gotland. Time for picnics!

What is HE doing on Gotland?

I got a small shock when I read this article and saw the photo in the local paper, helagotland.se. My first thought was ”What is Julian Assange doing on Gotland?” but then I realized that it wasn’t Julian, it was Sten Tolgfors, the Swedish Minister for Defence.

So, what do you think? I think they are very alike.

Springtime on Gotland

Maybe this is the best time to visit Gotland? April with warm weather, lot’s of blåsippor/Blue Anemorte everywhere, small birds twittering in our garden and bigger birds like crane, grey goose and heron. Gotland is still a very calm island in April, almost no visitors, but if more people came to Gotland in April and May they would be blessed to be able to walk in peace on our beaches and forests.

I think springtime is the best time on Gotland!

Playmobile Apple Store? Yes please! When can I get it?

This is so funny! It’s Think Geek who has made the video.
