The concept of trust

We all know that trust is important for relations. When we meet a new person we try to pick up as many useful signals and signs of who that person is as possible – can I trust her/him? I sometimes give lectures for big groups of people and then I always try to start with telling them a little about who I am so that the audience will get a chance to understand my motivation to why I stand there in front of them and if they can rely on my competence.

Social media is also about trust. We watch each other’s behavior and evaluate if those we communicate with are trustful. Some people claim that you have to meet someone face to face to know if he/she is trustworthy, but I disagree, it depends… I agree that you can’t pick up the same signals as you do face to face, when you interact with someone online, but on the other hand, when you meet face to face you can’t pick up the same signals as you do online. See? Every situation has its own set of possible signals.

You need to have good social skills and know how to interpret signals both when you interact online and face to face. The problem is that it probably takes a lifetime to learn and get ”all the experiences you need”, that’s why you are bound to make mistakes now and then.

I have two experiences of getting to know a person, work together and then these two relations evolved and ended in totally different ways.

Man #1

The first one is a man who contacted me and we had a meeting face to face. We had a lot of fun discussing marketing, communication and media. It led to the idea of writing a book together. We lived far away from each other, so most of the time we used internet to discuss the project. I thought that I could trust this man, and I really wanted to get that book written, so I probably neglected a few signals that should never be neglected. Like if the person you work with suggests a timeline for the project that is extremely short and at the same time, that person don’t deliver his part of the job. Like if the person continues to talk like if he would deliver his part of the job, and still fails to deliver in time? I don’t find procrastinators a bit charming. In fact, to expose others for your own disability to deliver jobs right in time is something I always have disliked and after this experience I truly hate it.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone can be late at some occasions, but not every time. To not deliver in time on a regular basis is to lie.

This man also wanted me and my company to do another project with him. It was very important that HE should be the project leader even though he lacked in experience and knowledge about the subject. Even so I thought that it could be a good idea to have a project leader in the country where the project took place. The more I think about this afterwards, the more certain I get that this project would have run smoother and more effective with me as the project leader. It would also have been more fair towards the customer. With him as the project leader economy and hierarchy seemed to be touchy subjects as well?

This man had his way of saying ”If I should be honest, and one is supposed to be honest, right?” and then he would tell me something that afterwards seemed a bit strange and left a feeling that he was actually hiding something.

How did this relation work out? It didn’t. In the end he burnt all his bridges by saying the most hurtful and rude things. So, we don’t work together anymore.

Man #2

My next example is a man that I have never met face to face. We learned to know each other in the comment’s field at a stock forum. After a while we engaged in a more frequent communication – I told him about Sweden and the island of Gotland where I live and he told me about the place where he lived. It so happened that I got a job request from a person who needed a job to get done very quickly. I could almost do the job, but not all the way and this man happened to have the knowledge that I lacked.

We did four jobs together, created a good working method and the result was excellent! I could trust this man. He delivered right in time, he kept me informed of his plans during a job, so that I would get a chance to adapt my plans. He was kind, polite, accurate, effective and fun. I trusted him. I trusted his knowledge, I trusted that he would do his part of the job and I knew that he wouldn’t try to fool me. How can I say this when I never met him face to face?

Well, one thing that I remember is when I asked him how much he charged per hour. He sent me a list of all kinds of jobs  that he got payed to do – many of them not full payment because it was more like jobs he did for fun, he wasn’t sure how he should define the job he was about to do for me. It turned out that we both charged about the same for qualified work, so I decided that he of course would get payed as much as I get payed per hour.

Maybe he did have some problem with delivering some things, like his invoice… I had to ask him again and again to send me his bill. Not until I said ”Please, I want to be able to ask you to do more jobs with me, but if I don’t get the chance to pay you, then I will feel like if I’m using you, and then I will feel bad to ask you to do more jobs” did he send his first bill. Maybe he wasn’t truthful all the time either, because when I asked him ”How many hours did you spend on this job?” he would give me a number and I would send my invoice to the customer, then I would get my coworker’s bill, only to find that he charged me just half of what he said he should… I didn’t know what to say about that, but when I sort of complained, he wrote back ”A good conscience is the best pillow”.

How did this relation work out? Perfectly fine until the end. The problem is that it ended because he got sick and died in a very short time. He was part of my future plans, not a very big part because I do many kinds of jobs, but still a part that I enjoyed and felt proud over. I looked forward to keep on working with him. I trusted him.

Conclusions:
  • Trust is necessary for good working relations
  • It’s easy to fool yourself that you trust someone – you shouldn’t trust yourself then…
  • Meeting someone face to face doesn’t necessarily mean that you get better at evaluating that person.
  • It’s absolutely possible to trust someone that you have only interacted with online.
  • In fact, communication is the relation, no matter if you communicate on internet or face to face.

Let Tim Cook do his job!

I think the market behaves like a spoiled kid when talking about Apple. Nagging and complaining and poor Tim Cook is becoming more of a target for their complaints than appreciated for the work he does.

I hate it when people complain without having a fair suggestion of how ”whatever it is” could be done in a better way. When it comes to Apple it’s hard to come up with such suggestions because they work behind closed doors. I think it’s a good achievement of Apple to keep on working on those innovations, products and services behind those closed doors, like they do, considering the pressure from those impatient dogs that barks outside.

I mean, what good is it in launching a product before it’s good enough to be launched? Apple had it’s map failure half a year ago and at the same time the iPhone 5 did not have enough of new features to please those barking dogs. So, why should Apple risk to do something like that again? I am sure that I will never get in the same position as Tim Cook, but if I woke up in a miracle fairytale and actually found myself to be the CEO of Apple tomorrow I am absolutely sure of one thing and that is that I would not launch any products before they are ready. Simple as that.

I think Apple show that they have high integrity in doing their own business in the way they believe are the best way to do it. If you have any complaints on that, well, then nothing stops you from starting your own business and show the world how it should be done.

By increasing dividends and buybacks Apple has made an effort to satisfy those barking dogs but also to give back to the shareholders, which is fair. I think that it takes a lot to make those barking dogs satisfied and I’m sure that Apple has to focus on other tasks that are more important.

At the same time I think that Apple’s policy for communicating with their customers and the stock market needs to change, because the expectations have changed but also because the possibility to invest in relationships with the customers and the market has changed and if Apple doesn’t start to work more on their relations in social media – there are so many other companies that will. Since I blogged about this the first time I get more confident in that opinion for every day.

When I think of how great they are at building relations with the customers face to face in the Apple Stores it gets even more strange that we don’t get that online. Also, we are a lot of people that really love Apple and would be proud to be able to help. In the 90’s Guy Kawasaki got famous being and Apple evangelist. The way to do it 2013 is to spread the message with the help of Apple enthusiasts and I think it would be easy to arrange that.

I so wish that Tim Cook would read this…

Where minds meet

I have a book called Where Minds Meet by Kathleen Kelley Reardon. I must admit that I haven’t read the book properly but I like the title (but now when I googled her and found her blog, I had to bookmark it, because she has some interesting things to say – read it!). Where do minds meet? When? How? I think it’s a blessing to meet a person that I can connect with in that special way that makes me feel like our minds have meet. That is something more than just exchanging polite words.

It’s a moment of light to find that another person is thinking about subjects in a way that is similar to your own way of thinking of those subjects – similar, but not a copy. The beauty is that the other one’s thoughts fit with your own thoughts and together they can build a new, better and stronger thought.

When another person’s thoughts can help me to understand a subject better and hopefully that I can ”pay” with giving back some of my thoughts. Exchanging thoughts.

I am in the process of writing my second book and one of the things I love about writing a book is that it gives me the opportunity to get in touch with anyone to ask questions. Well, I’m writing a book, ain’t I? So, I contact a lot of different persons, sometimes I get answers, sometimes I don’t, but when I get answers it’s a happy feeling and especially when I feel like the answer is really adding a piece of important information. Then I feel very humble about the situation – someone actually allowed me to use a glimpse from their mind in my book.

At other times I find something in a book that I can use. Then I haven’t got the exclusive feeling of meeting the author’s mind, but even so, the action of writing a book is always the authors way to show a piece of her or his mind. ”Here, read it, use it” and I think most of the authors also think ”use it and make me proud”, because it’s when someone actually adopts your thoughts that your book can make a difference and when that happens, I, as an author, get proud.

The book I’m writing right now is called ”The Good Chatter in social media” or, at the moment I’m actually writing on the first edition, the Swedish edition that’s called ”Det Goda Tramset i sociala medier”. I write it together with professor Niklas Myhr who is teaching social media at Chapman University, Orange County, California. We met in the summer 2011 at Almedalen Week on Gotland. It didn’t take long until our minds connected but it took half a year until we decided to write a book. Now, a year later, we are about to finish that book. As soon as we have the Swedish version ready, we will translate it to English.

Social media is very much about getting minds to meet. I don’t think that every comment or interaction is a meeting of minds, but now and then it happens and it gives good energy. I can talk about the benefits of social media, how to get new connections, how to develop your relationships, the access to news and information, the support and so on but the most precious moments in my interactions on social media is when minds meet. The rest of the result of my investments in relationships are good and make me happy too, but I think that the reason to why I keep on being active in social media are a lot about those moments when minds meet and one thing that makes it so special is that on social media I might get that connection with my neighbor or with someone I never met face to face from another part of the world.

When that happens I also start to think about the place they live in and suddenly that place have at least one inhabitant that I know, which makes a huge difference for my perception of that place. I remember thirty years ago when I did some research in Uppsala asking people about immigrants and it was so amazing to hear how they talked about immigrants like an ”anonymous group” to which they added preconceptions. When I asked ”do you know any immigrant?” they often looked surprised and said something like ”eh, no, not really, well, I mean, I do know xxxx but he’s not really an immigrant, he’s more like a Swede…”. It was like every immigrant they thought of as someone they knew was an exception from the preconceptions about immigrants.

When you learn to know someone you replace preconceptions with individual information about that person. Until you learn to know someone from a special place or with a special interest or special job you base your evaluation on preconceptions because that’s all you got. The more we know about different persons from different places with different jobs or interests, the less preconceptions.

When I think about social media like this I feel like social media has a great potential for planting the idea of peace in people’s mind. The peace movement Israel Loves Iran is one example of how social media can be used to give people a feeling of being connected with each other across the borders. But every time you and I connect it means something too. The world gets a little bit more familiar and friendly.

It’s time to get social Apple!

Charlie Kindel has written an interesting article about Why Nobody Can Copy Apple and his conclusion is very simple:

It only focuses on one customer: The Consumer.

I see this like a wholeness where it’s not only about seeing the market as business or customers but also about seeing the customer as both a private person and a business person. That’s how I started to think after reading his article.

This goes hand in hand with the development with social media. The old way is to think of business and work like something separate from your private life. In social media the tendency is to let them melt together and become one. We do business with persons, not with companies or brands. A lot of people haven’t yet understood this and are afraid to show themselves in person on Facebook. But we, as being customers, expect to see the person behind the business more and more.

Except from companies like Apple, which is a paradox. Imagine how cool it would be to follow Tim Cook or Jony Ive on Twitter, Facebook or a blog? Actually, that might be what’s missing right now? The shareholders want to get the feeling of what’s happening and all they can rely on are rumors and rare interviews and speeches. And we all need to fill in the empty space after Steve Jobs. I always thought of Apple as an exception from social media but now, starting to think like this, I actually got scared. I think Apple needs social media right now! I don’t think that Samsung’s CEO is blogging or anything, but imagine if Tim Cook could be the first in this business to do it? He would for sure be one of the most interesting persons to follow…

It’s not like one has to reveal secrets just because you have a blog. People want to feel connected to the persons behind the products today. Steve Jobs managed to create that feeling without social media, but Tim Cook who seems to be a really nice and clever man doesn’t have a similar strong connection with the customers and fans. A blog would be an excellent channel for him. He could connect with the customers.

Also, another thing that Apple does against ”the rules” is the system for feedback. I understand that Apple is big, but it is another paradox to think of the extreme high level of customer care in Apple Stores in contrast to the dull system for feedback online. I send in suggestions and feedback all the time but never get a simple ”thanks”. When I send feedback to other companies they often answer me and make me feel like if they listen to me.

I think the Apple Communities could get a more friendly tone and also it would be great to know if someone at Apple actually reads what goes on there in the discussion. That’s also a place where it would mean so much if people could feel that they participated in developing Apple’s products to get even better. Of course, it’s all the designers and engineers at Apple who does 99,9% of the hard work, but even so, it wouldn’t hurt to emphasize the feeling of ”all us Apple users are a big family and we help Apple as much as we can”. 

You know, I think that’s how it all begun? I remember that there were some kind of Apple groups in Växjö (Sweden) and there were more of them all over the world. Today I don’t know what has happened with those groups, I never hear of them. But today we could create that feeling of belonging to a group on the internet.

And I think we are a lot of persons that long for ways to connect with Apple in ways like this.

So, please Apple: consider becoming more social online!

Doing my business on Facebook

Sometimes I pick up signals from people (90% men) that can’t understand my interest for social media. They nod to each other, make jokes like ”Has anyone been on Facebook today? Well, we know Åsa has…” and the underlying meaning is that I’m kind of a strange person who waste my time on social media. Sometimes I take my time to talk to them and try to make them understand why I spend so much time on social media, why I find it both fascinating and necessary, but if they aren’t interested there is not much I can do about it and I don’t really have the time to convert social media suspicious to social media interest. If they don’t get it, they don’t get it and I just go on minding my own business and part of that is doing my business in social media.

Today started with a question from a university in California. An international class will go to Scandinavia and they were thinking of Gotland as a place to visit, did I know any companies and persons they should meet? Yes of course! I wrote a long list with suggestions. How was that good for my business? Well, one thing leads to another. In this case I’m not sure what it could lead to, but it comes natural to me to help out.

Then I contacted a person who found my company on internet searching for a special solution and sent me a request. Well, that was not exactly about social media, but I wrote about it on Facebook and it was fun to get my friends reactions, they wished me luck and it’s part of my marketing to make a buzz about my daily work.

Another friend contacted me on the Facebook chat. She made a request about me giving a lecture about social media. I will come back with an offer to her.

When I mentioned that on Facebook, a woman sent me a message with information about an organization that might need my services.

A couple of hours before lunch I got an invitation, via Facebook events, for a lunch walk together with some businesspeople – I couldn’t go with them today, but now I know that they do this lunch walk every Thursday.

We had lunch at a restaurant that gives excellent and nice information on their Facebook page.

Back at the office I checked a secret Facebook group to get the last changes in a presentation for a project, I made the changes and then I had a meeting with a man – do I need to say that we booked the meeting using Facebook?

So, have anyone been on Facebook today? Yes, I have. And so have a lot of my business contacts. I think people should worry less about if I have been on Facebook today and start to worry about the opportunities they might miss if they don’t spend enough time on Facebook every day… How can they afford to not pay attention to Facebook?
