Reflections after my visit to Estonia

Entrance to ICT Demo Center, Ülemisty City

Now I’m back home after my short visit to Estonia. It felt like a happy-injection from the future to be there. Yes, there are still so many problems for them to solve but the spirit is optimistic and they are doing a great job over there. The overall feeling is that everyone is so young and they have a fresh attitude towards new technic. Their digital ID-cards and the invention Skype are good examples of that.

I think that they are really skilled in Estonia and they are young and hungry to be part of the worlds development, in fact, they want to be an active and important part. Compared to Sweden we have a lot of that too, but we don’t have Estonias hunger, the deep desire to show the world! Of course, some people in Sweden have it, but with supporting surroundings filled with people who are also optimistic and heading for the future, the power is so much stronger.

The building next to ICT Democenter. We had lunch here.

It’s time for everyone to think of Estonia as a new Silicon Valley, a place for exciting technological development and forget ideas about Estonia as a place for producing cheap goods – like I think is what comes up first when Swedes think about business and Estonia.

Entrance to Tehnopol. Skype was developed here!

One of the most inspiring visits during our trip was at Garage48. They have a model for ”innovation-race” that I find very interesting. I will try to see if there is any interest for it here on Gotland. It would be so cool if we can have more connections between Gotland and Estonia.

This small creatures was at floor at Garage48!

You can see more of my photos here, but the text is in Swedish.

Colorful Estonia

On Tuesday I will go to Estonia for the third time since 2004. The first time I went to Saaremaa Island, the second to Tallinn, but also Pärnu and Haapsalu. This time I will got to Tallinn and visit some companies in the IT-industry.

This time I will stay at Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel but only for one night. That’s a shame, because I really like the pictures from the hotel and their SPA. I also read The Legend of Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel with great amusement:

Human civilization has long since abandoned its original home in the galaxy and is striding across the vastness of space. Nobody now remembers the original corner of space that people originated from. Historians believe that some legends that speak of a now-unknown celestial body called Earth might even be true.

When I have been to Estonia I get the feeling that they have started all over on a blank page. Being very tired of all the years they have been ruled by Russia, they are now making up for all their lost years and they are doing it like wild and happy calfs let outside for the first time in spring. It is so refreshing and colorful!

In Sweden when we talk about art and design there is often a connection to minimalism or the Swedish word ”lagom” which means ”moderate, adequate”. There is some kind of almost japanese exclusive touch – which can also be considered to be excluding for everyone that is not ”initiated” and knows what is supposed to be beautiful. But that beauty might not be connected to your heart.

From what I have seen so far from Estonia, I think that Estonian design talks to your heart. And they are getting more and more skilled in their expressions. It will be very exciting to go there and see if I can notice any differences from the last time I was there.

Time to change to a mac?

I saw this ad today. It says

”Within 2 minutes my PC was tested and 253 faults in Windows was found”

Test your PC to find faults that slows down your system.

I find it quite amusing to try to understand how the pc-people think. It seems like they think it is something positive to test a PC and find 253 faults? Why not buy a computer from Apple and go for as few faults as possible from start?

If you would like to know more about Apple’s ecosystem…

… please read Brian X Chen’s blogpost! He gives a full description of what it is that you are buying when you buy an iPad. It will be really hard for the competitors to win the race.
